Oswald Poreau was born in Schaarbeek, Belgium in 1877 and attended a military school as a young boy. He soon displayed some artistic promise and was given art lessons by a family friend, the painter Joseph Quinaux. It was Quinaux who, realizing his potential, encouraged him to attend the Academie de Bruxelles. Here, under the direction of Jan Stallaert, he studied architecture and painting. In 1900 he graduated and after a series of quite lengthily trips to England, Spain and France he settled in Brussels. His paintings of landscapes, town scenes and still-lifes are full of color and light and owe much to the influence of the French post-Impressionists. He exhibited his work widely and his images of the Meuse and Borinage Valleys became highly sought after. Oswald Poreau died in the town of Waterloo in 1955, his paintings can still be seen, however at the museum of Schaarbeek.
