Painting in the style of the Divisionists, Louis Pigniollet enjoyed painting the landscapes of the Fousges, Jura and Franche-Comte areas of France. Using a colorful, yet somewhat muted palette his works capture the subtle light he saw before him. In this example, painted near the town of Voussey in Vosges area of France we see an open landscape with women washing clothes in the river.
Louis Pigniollet was born in the town of Roanne in the Loire Valley in 1869. A pupil at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts of Lyon he moved to Paris after graduating to establish himself as a professional painter. He admired the works of Corot although his style was very different. In 1909 he moved to the town of Saint-Maur which coincided with his change of style from a more traditional French ‘Paysage’ approach to the ideals of Seurat and Signac. Louis Pigniollet died in the town of Saint-Maur in 1946. A similar painting to this view in both proportion and style entitled ‘Le Chemin du Lac’ is illustrated in the Dictionaire des Petits Maitres by Gerard Schuur.
